SOROTI UNIVERSITY TO ESTABLISH MUSEUM FOR ITESO AND KUMAM HERITAGE

By Abraham Ekwaru, Communication Officer Soroti

Soroti University has proposed setting up a cultural museum to preserve the history and traditions of the Iteso and Kumam communities.

The proposal was discussed on Friday during a consultative meeting at Soroti District headquarters. The meeting was attended by cultural leaders, university officials, and local stakeholders.

Prof. J.R. Ikoja Odongo said the museum would serve as a hub for safeguarding cultural artifacts, documenting oral histories, and supporting research and education.

“The Iteso and Kumam have a rich history that must be preserved and restored,” he said.

Prof. Ikoja Odongo said the university will work with cultural unions and elders to collect artifacts, documents, and oral histories for display.

He said the project is still in the planning stage, with discussions ongoing to secure funding and technical support.

James Okiror of the Iteso Cultural Union noted that the Ateso language is deteriorating, particularly among young people.

Okioro  highlighted the growing influence of Western culture, which he said threatens traditional practices.

Meanwhile His Royal Highness Papa Raphael Otaya Won Ateker Me Kumam emphasized the importance of cultural preservation.

He said both communities share a common heritage, but their languages, customs, and norms are slowly disappearing.

“As leaders, it is our duty to ensure that our culture is preserved for future generations,” he added.

The museum will also serve educational purposes. It will provide a platform for research, attract scholars, and offer students a chance to study the history of the Iteso and Kumam.
