PDM UPLIFTS RURAL MOTHER OF TEN INTO LIVESTOCK SUCCESS STORY

From a struggling mother of ten to a small-scale livestock farmer, Akello Magarate’s story is one of hope, resilience, and transformation, thanks to the Parish Development Model (PDM).

The 36-year-old resident of Central Ward in Tubur Town Council, Soroti District, says her life took a significant turn in August 2023 when she received a UGX 1 million cash injection during the first disbursement of the PDM funds in her area.

“At that time, I was not doing well,” Akello recalled. “I could barely meet my children’s needs, especially school fees.”

Determined to make the most out of the opportunity, Akello used UGX 1,000,000 to purchase seven sheep at UGX 150,000 each. The small remaining balance was used to build a basic shelter for them on her homestead.

Her decision has since borne fruit. The sheep multiplied to 22. “I have sold some along the way to raise school fees for my children and meet other household needs,” she said. “Now I have 13 remaining, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come.”

Akello, who is the sole breadwinner for her family, says the PDM gave her a new beginning and restored her sense of purpose. Before the funds came in, she admits life was difficult, and she constantly worried about the future of her children.

“I want to thank the government for this support,” she said with a smile. “It has really changed my life.”

Akello is now encouraging other women in her community to take advantage of the PDM initiative to improve their livelihoods.

“I call upon my fellow women and all community members to embrace such projects. They can truly make a difference, especially for those of us in rural areas,” she urged.

As she tends to her sheep and looks forward to further growth, Akello Magarate stands as a shining example of what can be achieved with a little help and a lot of determination.

The PDM, a flagship government program aimed at lifting households from subsistence to the money economy, continues to register success stories like Akello’s across Uganda. For women like Akello, the impact goes beyond numbers it offers dignity, empowerment, and a better future for their children.
