EXCITEMENT AS 11.5KM ROAD CONSTRUCTION BEGINS IN OCOKICAN SUB-COUNTY
Local leaders of Ocokican Sub-County in Soroti District are celebrating the commencement of an 11.5-kilometer road construction project, a long-awaited development that will enhance connectivity to health facilities, schools, and markets.
The road, which will link the villages of Onyerai, Ateng, Okalis, and Abango, along with several neighboring trading centers, is valued at UGX 150.5 million. The project is expected to boost transportation, facilitate trade, and improve access to essential services within the sub-county.
Speaking on the impact of the project to Teso Post, Stephen Ebunyu, the LC III Chairperson of Ocokican Sub-County, emphasized its importance in overcoming past transportation challenges.
"This road will make it easier for our communities to access Ocokican Health Center II, which has previously been cut off during heavy rains due to swampy areas," Ebunyu stated.
He further highlighted how the improved infrastructure will benefit farmers, particularly those transporting their produce to the cattle market, which serves as a vital source of income for many households.
"We are excited as local residents because this road is crucial for economic growth. It will enhance the transportation of goods, benefiting businesses and farmers alike," he added, thanking the government for funding the project.
Simon Okello Ekolu, the Acting District Engineer, confirmed that the road construction is funded by the central government, as part of UGX 1 billion allocation to all districts across the country aimed at improving road networks.
"This project is one of several roadworks being undertaken to expand our district’s road coverage and enhance accessibility," Ekolu noted.
In addition to the Ocokican road project, the district recently launched; the Amukaru-Telamot-Awaliwal-Obule road (16.5km), valued at UGX 143.5 million, the Awoja-Anganya-Osimaling road (4.6km), valued at UGX 63 million
These projects align with the district’s infrastructure development strategy, aiming to open up rural communities to better economic opportunities, social services, and market accessibility.
With construction now underway, residents are hopeful that the new roads will enhance mobility, reduce travel costs, and contribute to overall socio-economic growth in Ocokican and beyond.
